Whatever we need

Whatever we need

This is Pentecost week and I have been feeling overwhelmingly thankful that I live in the age the prophets longed for, the time when God has poured his Holy Spirit on all people. I’ve been remembering times when my heart was warmed by God’s Spirit, when I was on my knees in awe, flooded with the Father’s love. It is too easy to forget those moments. It is too easy to live as if Pentecost didn’t happen.

The thing is that we live in a world where sometimes life’s wonderful and the wind is gentle in the trees and it’s easier to hear the whisper of the Spirit. Then I walk down the road and a horrid dog attacks my dog and someone shouts at me. One moment, my heart soars as I sing a wonderful worship song and the next, I’m off to the Marsden for radiotherapy. This side of heaven, life is a mix.

Yetwhatever we need today is found in God’s gift of his Holy Spirit.

Are you bruised or hurting? The Spirit is your Comforter.

Are you confused or afraid? The Spirit is your Counsellor.

Are you in weak and in need of help? The Spirit is your Helper.

Is your heart cold? The Spirit will set you on fire.

Do you need prayer? The Spirit intercedes for you (Romans 8:26-27) and will help you to pray.

Do you endlessly fail to reach the towering standards of God’s law? The Spirit is the finger of God who wrote the 10 Commandments on tablets of stone and who will write God’s law on your heart (Jeremiah 31:33), transforming you from within.

Do you need the Father’s hug today? His Spirit will pour out his love in your heart (Romans 5:5) and show you that you are his beloved child (Romans 8:15).

Do you need the power of God to work in you and through you? The Greek word for the power of the Spirit is dunamis from which we get the word dynamite. And still, God’s Spirit is gentle as a dove.

Whatever we need today is found in this gift of God’s self to us.
